WHAT IS INFLUENZA – A (H1N1)?

Influenza – A (H1N1) (known as Swine flu) is a new influenza virus causing illness in people.  First detected in Mexico in April, 2009, it has spread to many countries in the World.  Swine flu is basically a misnomer.  This was originally referred to as “swine flu” because laboratory testing showed that many of the genes in this new virus were very similar to those found in pigs in North America. 
Influenza A (H1N1) virus is contagious and spreads from human to human. One gets affected within a distance of 3 feet from the person suffering from this disease.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES:

         Do’s:

• Keep Washing your hands frequently with Soap and Water
• Drink lots of Water
• Have Good & Sufficient sleep
• Keep a distance of more than 3 feet from a person suffering from Swine Flu
• Have a balanced and Nutritious Diet
• After returning from a Tour from Abroad (Out of India), take minimum 10 days rest at home and preferably get a Medical Check Up done
• Whenever going for a check up in case of suspicion, tie a Mask (See Overleaf for Sources) or Handkerchief on your Nose & Mouth
• In case of Suspicion, Contact immediately on the below mentioned Addresses
• Some of the Household Preventives suggested by people are – Consume Raw Garlic in food, Keep a clove in mouth, consume little Turmeric Powder in milk.

     
         Dont’s:

• Avoid travel Abroad, (Out of India), as far as possible
• Avoid Unnecessary Visits to Public places where large No of People gather (Malls, Theaters, Market Places, Locals, Buses, etc)
• Do not Spit in Public Places
• Do not take Medicines without Proper Medical Prescription by an Authorized Doctor

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS:

• Having Mild fever not recovering for more than 3 days
• Nausea and Vomiting
• Difficulty in Breathing
• Cough
• Sore throat
• Body ache
• Headache

IF YOU SUSPECT ABOVE SYMPTOMS….

• You can go to one of following 15 pre-screening centers:
  

• Minimize Contact with people and take rest at home as far as possible
• Intake of Liquid Diet at frequent Intervals

According to the National Institute of Virology, Putting drops of Eucalyptus (Nilgiri) oil in your Masks & Handkerchiefs is one of the Preventive Measures against Swine Flu. In case of Non Availability of Masks, a clean Handkerchief can also be used.
