Indian government made its first act for standards of Weight and Measures in 1956. It was based on international system of units and metric system. The year 1976 saw the act change. The new act is now known as the Standards of Weights and Measures Act 1976. There are other Acts and rules for the Weight and measures Department. They are,

  • The Standards of Weights and Measures Act 1976
  • The Standards of Weights and Measures (Enforcement) Act 1985
  • The Standards of Weights and Measures(Packaged Commodities) Rules 1977
  • The Standards of Weights and Measures (Approval of Models)Rules, 1987
  • The Delhi Standards of Weights and Measures (Enforcement) Rules 1988

The government of India has made these rules and regulations so that there will be uniformity through out India and it will protect the consumer as well as the farmer, who wants to sell his grains.

The standards of Weight and Measures rules 1987 makes it necessary for the manufacturer of the weighing machines to obey the rules.

Another Regulatory body which is active in India is BIS, that is Bureau of Indian Standards. To get your weighing machine certified the manufacturer needs to apply for the license and comply with the set regulations. After that he can put ISI mark on his ware.

Whoever wants to manufacture weighing machines must follow the rules and regulations of the govt. of India.
