Industrial Brakes:

Clutch Lining:
The linings of the disc used to be made of asbestos. They're now made of fiberglass or other materials that do not contain asbestos due to the effects of asbestos to our health. However, asbestos provides superior cushioning and better wear than the newer materials at this time. The linings contain copper and/or bronze metal strands to aid heat dissipation and to help prolong disc life.
The linings have grooves cut in their faces for air ventilation and to help prevent lining dust build up. Dust build up causes chatter and slipping due to the slip/grab action of the dust.

Brake Lining:
Brake linings are composed of a relatively soft but tough and heat-resistant material with a high coefficient of dynamic friction(and ideally an identical coefficient of static friction) typically mounted to a solid metal backing using high-temperature adhesives or rivets.
Using a typical bicycle brake as an example, the backing would be the metal shell which provides mechanical support, and the lining would be the rubbery portion which contacts the rims when the brakes are applied. Brake linings should be composed of relatively soft but tough and heat resistant material with a high coefficient of dynamic friction.

Brake Lining Material & Brake Pad Lining:
Brake pads are a component of disc brakes used in automotive and other applications. Brake pads are steel backing plates with friction material bound to the surface that faces the disk brake rotor.
Brake pad materials range from asbestos to organic or semi-metallic formulations. Each of these materials has proven to have advantages and disadvantages regarding environmental friendliness, wear, noise, and stopping capability.

Electromagnetic Clutches:
Electromagnetic clutches operate electrically, but transmit torque mechanically. This is why they used to be referred to as electro-mechanical clutches. The electromagnetic clutch is most suitable for remote operation since no linkages are required to control its engagement. It has fast, smooth operation. However, because energy dissipates as heat in the electromagnetic actuator every time the clutch is engaged, there is a risk of overheating.
