Speak fluently and comfortably in English

English is fun. People wish to learn English for various reasons. A person came and told me,’’ I want to learn English, because I want to have fun. I want my life to be full of fun.’’ I asked him what has English got to do with it? He looked surprised and said,’’ I like to meet new people and make friends with people who, I see, enjoying life, having fun. Every time I try to interact with them, after a while, they start speaking in English, no matter what the age group. I try to speak the way, I can. They laugh and say, you are so funny. I understand what they mean-- they make fun of me. It makes me feel very sad. I want to have fun, speaking fluently like others and not be called ‘funny’.’’ I realised his situation and decided to help & enrolled him in the class. Now, he is fun to be with, speaks fluently and comfortably in English and is not called funny anymore. Be a great conversationalist and a very effective speaker

Expression power is the backbone of good personality. A gentleman came to meet me in my class where I teach English communication skills. He was tall, well-built, good looking, well dressed & an engineer by profession. The only thing which was not adding up was the sad expression on his face. He told me, ’’Mam, I am very competent in my work, wherever I go, people treat me with respect initially. The moment I start speaking in English. they lose interest in me. I speak correct English, but whatever I say, sounds like a person giving commentary in a documentary movie. This has stopped my progress in my work front also. He asked, if this can be changed. I understood his problem. Narrating something is an art, knowing how to start, where to pause, how the punchline should be delivered-- all this requires guidance and practice. He enrolled in my class and now he is a great conversationalist and a very effective speaker. Fluency in English is not everything--- My work will speak for me
.
This was  the opinion of an intelligent and competent mechanical engineer from Pune.
Once he was sent to Hyderabad to set right a mechanical problem in the instruments supplied by his company to this client in Hyderabad. This engineer went there, he was confident about his work but very poor in his English communication skills. He was given a local mechanic to do the manual work. This engineer gave instructions in Hindi and broken English to the mechanic and got the technical problem solved.
When the MD of the company came to know that the Pune representative has set right the problem, which they were facing, he was very happy. He came to thank this engineer personally. He asked him a simple question, " So what had gone wrong can you please tell me?" The engineer told me later," Mam,I was standing in front of the MD-- he was talking to me in English-- my mind just blanked out,my mouth went dry, I felt I had lost my voice. No words came out of my mouth I kept looking down."
The MD then asked the local mechanic. He explained in the local language, mixed with Hyderabadi English. He shook hands with the mechanic, thanked him profusely and without even looking at me, just walked away.
As shared with me, after reaching his hotel, he cried for an hour sitting alone, feeling so small in his own eyes. The moment of Glory should have been his, but his shortcoming of not being able to speak in fluent English, made him face this situation.
The first thing he did after returning to Pune, he appealed to his management and 10 engineers from the same company came with him and joined my Spoken English class        One full batch was booked for them. Never did they face such humiliation again.
So friends, don't wait for such situations in life. Join Mrs Surabhi Banerjee’s nearly 40 year old Spoken English class and become fluent in English.

Stage Fright and public speaking

This person was a Chartered Accountant. He came to meet me, spoke in perfect English for about 15minutes. I was totally puzzled, for I could not find a single mistake in whatever he was saying, so I asked him, ‘’How can I help you?’’
He started looking nervous he said,’’ Can I share my nightmarish experience of last week, which is giving me sleepless nights. Mam, I had gone to my village to attend a grand felicitation ceremony, arranged by my uncle, who is a big shot there. Some 50 persons where to be presented with a coconut and a shawl each, for the good work done by them throughout the year. The program was in Marathi. I reached early in the morning --my uncle was truly relieved to see me. He said, “The compere of the show had fallen ill & since I was a smart educated person from Pune, I would have to step in and do the compering”. I pleaded with him that I did not have the courage to speak in front of public. He was surprised & said, ” All you have to do, is read the written text. As you call out the name, the person will come, the chief guest will give the gift, this person will walk away, call the next person and that's all that you have to do”. I had no choice. I went up on stage, took the microphone in hand and started reading.

I had a problem of Stage Fright from childhood, so public speaking was out of question. I did not dare to look at the audience, just started calling out the names one after the other, without any pause. Suddenly, I found people were running on the stage, snatching their gift from the chief guest’s hands and the next person was pushing to reach, as his name had been called out. The public was having a great time laughing loudly at the comical scene, that was happening on the stage. I did not know what to do. Then, my uncle came on the stage, angrily asked me to leave the village immediately. No lunch for me. God knows, how he managed after that.’’ Mam, he said, ‘’Please help me to overcome my Stage Fright and fear of public speaking ‘’.
Now of course, he can confidently speak in English after he enrolled in my class and is one of my favourite students.
